How do you choose the right weight for your business T-shirts?

Guides and tutorials

Why is grammage a key criterion when choosing a professional T-shirt?

When it comes to selecting a professional T-shirt, many people focus on the cut, colour or type of cotton. But the real secret of a successful garment is often hidden in one figure: the fabric weight. This small indicator, expressed in g/m², sums up the density and quality of the fabric.

For a brand, company or association, the choice of T-shirt weight is not insignificant: it influences the perceived image, the comfort of employees or participants, the fit of the garment, but also its cost and durability. Hence the importance of understanding what it represents and how to select it intelligently.

What is textile grammage?

Textile grammage is the weight of a fabric expressed in grams per square metre (g/m²). This figure does not refer to the total weight of the T-shirt, but to the density of the material used.

The higher the grammage, the thicker and more resistant the fabric, while a lighter grammage will offer greater flexibility and breathability. For example, a 150 g/m² T-shirt will be lighter than a 200 g/m² model, just as an ordinary sheet of paper is thinner than bristol board.

This principle applies to all types of textiles: polo shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces, tote bags or personalised T-shirts…

The main categories of T-shirt weights

Lightweight T-shirts (up to 155 g/m²)

These models are characterised by their lightness and fluidity. They’re perfect for promotional distribution, one-off events or summer operations, where comfort and ventilation are more important than durability. Their low cost makes them a preferred option for large-scale communication campaigns.

Medium-weight T-shirts (155 to 195 g/m²)

It’s the best compromise between strength, comfort and adaptability. This type of personalised T-shirt is just as suitable for companies looking to dress their staff as it is for brands looking for a versatile fabric. It supports personalisation well and holds up well after washing.

Heavyweight and premium T-shirts (195 to 300 g/m² and over)

Designed to last, these high-weight T-shirts offer a top-of-the-range finish and excellent durability. The feel is denser, the perception more qualitative. Ideal for brand collections, corporate wear or uniforms. A heavier fabric reflects an image of reliability and solidity – strong values in a professional environment.

Choosing the right weight for the purpose

1. Event communication

For a trade show, festival or event, choose a lightweight fabric. You’ll cut costs while ensuring breathability. These models are easy to customise by printing.

2. Sale of personalised products

If you sell personalised T-shirts to your customers, opt for a medium to heavy weight. A fabric that is too thin can detract from the perceived quality of your brand. Conversely, a well-structured T-shirt enhances the appeal of the finished product.

3. Uniforms and team clothing

T-shirts designed for everyday wear should be hard-wearing and durable. Choose a weight greater than 180 g/m², suitable for regular use and frequent washing. This is also a good option if you plan to embroider.

Avoid common shopping mistakes

  • Don’t rely on price alone. A low-cost T-shirt with a low grammage may be suitable from time to time, but its durability will be limited.

  • Compare materials. Two T-shirts of the same weight will not have the same effect depending on the type of cotton (combed, organic, ring-spun, etc.).

  • Take the season into account. A light weight for summer, a denser weight for cooler climates.

Before placing your overall order, don’t hesitate to order individual items so that you can judge for yourself the feel, cut and fit of the fabric.

In a nutshell

Textile grammage plays a central role in the quality, durability and perceived value of a professional T-shirt:

  • Lightweight for one-off events.

  • Medium for versatility.

  • Heavyweight for a top-of-the-range image.

Each use has its own ideal weight. Choosing the right weight means investing in the relevance and consistency of your textile communication.
